About the Marriage and Family Therapy Lab at UH Mānoa
The Marriage and Family Therapy Lab at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is a space dedicated to advancing relational health and family resilience in Hawai’i and the Pacific. Housed within the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) and the Human Development & Family Science (HDFS) program, the lab serves as a hub for research, training, and community collaboration.
Our Purpose
The lab was created to support students, faculty, and community partners in understanding how relationships thrive within Hawai’i’s unique cultural and ecological landscape. By blending academic research with hands-on training and meaningful community partnerships, we seek to prepare future marriage and family therapists to serve local families with cultural humility and clinical competence.
What We Do
- Conduct research on family resilience, relationship health, and culturally grounded therapy approaches.
- Provide training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students interested in family therapy careers.
- Partner with local organizations to promote relational well-being across the lifespan.
Through this work, the lab hopes to bridge research, education, and practice; strengthening families, communities, and the next generation of mental health professionals in Hawai’i.
